Guitar solo Epiphany at Greenwich House, Saturday night

http://www.alansondheim.org/hardsolo.png
https://youtu.be/ig0Puufa7_Y VIDEO (earphones if possible)

This was a hard solo. I was nervous. I wore my 2600 hat shielding
the light. Stephen Dydo gave me a Tibetan shirt he brought back
from Ladakh which matched his own. I was thinking about Xinjiang,
Tibet, China. I wanted to play has fast as possible. I wanted
to see what I could do. I wanted to prove I could play as well now
as I did then. I wanted to honor the guitar I was playing which
has been with me for over half a century. I wanted to honor the
maker of the guitar, Di Giorgio, and the restorer from the early
1980s, Candelario Delgado, one of the great Los Angeles guitar
makers. I wanted to prove my athleticism in my fingers, my hands,
my arms, not muscular but quick. I wanted to play so fast my mind
couldn't wander. I wanted to think through the sound, not around
it. I wanted never to know what was coming next. I wanted the
sound to take control. I wanted nothing else but that sound. I
wanted time to stop. I didn't want to know where or when I was. I
wanted all this all at once. I wanted this perfection. I wanted
nothing else and everything and nothing. I played for hours in
little more than three minutes. I practiced for weeks. I forgot
literally how to slow down. I literally couldn't. I literally
could only go the way it went. I literally could stop only when
it stopped.

Video by Azure Carter, thanks to Stephen Dydo, Robert, Withers.
More from this soon. (Music for the Earth, Stephen Dydo and
Friends, Greenwich House last Saturday night.)

Alan Sondheim

Arm and Hand Access Grid Worldwide Tour

http://www.alansondheim.org/armandhand.png
https://youtu.be/j9CPU9XP5ys video

from nearly before or after 2007-2008, early experiment using
the access grid which allows multiple cameras and microphones
from a single location to connect to the same at another
location. designed for invisible walls classroom use, the setup
is complex. we used the access grid at the virtual environments
lab at west virginia university in a number of ways; one of the
main ones involved bouncing an audio/video signal around the
world through other nodes, back to the lab in morgantown. by
using video feedback, i.e. the camera and mics aimed at the
receiving monitor, we were able to create closed circuits or
loops from morgantown through various other sites, including one
in new south wales, australia. in other words, the usual video
feedback occurred, but with delay occasioned by each layer
looping the entire globe. we used azure carter as subject for he
most part, looping sound and site and motion; in this earlier
experiment (which btw involved multiple computers in morgantown
as well; the software was complex), we used my waving hand for
proof of concept. the delays and color shifts were the result of
the signal travel. the procedure reminded me of the even older
email bangpaths that allowed one to send a file anywhere through
specified nodes.

in those days, not very long ago, i was also thinking about net
weather, the conditions of the routers, interferences, bad
connections, local gaps, and so forth; i remember being able to
tell the 'state of the net' in a particular direction by the
rate and interruptions of packets. michel serres' book on the
parasite was in the back of my mind, as was the collection of
texts on the very early net by peter salus. the only originality
i could claim here is the use and present/presencing of the body
itself, the somatic and almost punk register of the process or
piece, something i continue to think about and work through.
because we have our bodies have us and it's the appearance of
this momentary thickening we call a lifespan that's dependent on
the permeability of the world's fabric.

this quote from a letter by dylan thomas to pamela hansford
johnson, in october 1933, is relevant i think:

"I fail to see how the emphasizing of the body can, in any way,
be regarded as hideous. The body, its appearance, death, and
diseases, is a fact, sure as the fact of a tree. It has roots in
the same earth as the tree. The greatest description I know of
our 'earthiness' is to be found in John Donne's _Devotions,_
where he describes man as earth of the earth, his body earth,
his hair a wild shrub growing out of the land. All thoughts and
actions emanate from the body. Therefore the description of a
thought or action - however abstruse it may be - can be beaten
home by bringing it on to a physical level. Every idea,
intuitive or intellectual, can be imaged and translated in terms
of the body, its flesh, skin, blood, sinews, veins, glands,
organs, cells, or senses."

(p. 27 The Notebooks of Dylan Thomas, ed. Ralph Maud.)

the gendering is a problem of course, but the thinking of earth,
what i consider emanant, emanation or effluvia, avatar imaginary
or dissipating rootedness, relates well to the body immersed
within the access grid, or rather the imagine/imaginary of the
body traversing the access grid, and i, we, they will stop here.
After Assault

http://lounge.espdisk.com/archives/847 (best)

being assaulted by a man driving a white SUV who tried to run
us down today on the corner of Fourth Ave and Dean; we reported
to the police but were told the only charge we could make was
"harassment" even though I was kicked and bruised; I was told
"nothing" would come of the charge, it would be filed away,
wouldn't even be cross-referenced if there were another incident.
So was late to the doctor's, in shock, bruised, Azure's crying,
we got there, we waited 45 minutes and I couldn't take any more,
still in shock. So we went to rebook and I waited in line to
rebook and finally cut in saying look I was assaulted, I'm in
shock, we have to leave, the police were called. And was told to
wait my turn. At which point I screamed, kicked the elevator
door; it came, I went in, still kicking, out of my mind. Never
got to see the doctor. Came back shaky. Called some friends. Of
course then recorded with sindhi sarangi,
http://espdisk.com/alansondheim/afterassault1.mp3 nice and calm
and beautiful with the new drone string, then a choppier version
with sarangi, http://espdisk.com/alansondheim/afterassault2.mp3
and did I tell you healthcare sucks in the city, but I'll drone
my way out of it...

Some images - ranging from interesting to mundane. The last group
is best looked at small. The panoramas work best at original size.
This isn't a recording of anything except my carrying cameras;
a few people; hiking around Cooper's Rock; walking around Morgan-
town; the 123 club where I've played a few times; some buildings
of interest including a few the conference was held in; a true
bug (hemiptera) I need to identify; young rattlesnake; etc. The
talks were great - our panels were terrific, and I met some good
people and saw some friends, Tim and Helen and Frances and Rachel
and Frank, wonderful!

American Museum of Natural History

relatively unlabeled hodge-podge of biodiversity (which is rapidly
coming to an end as extinctions increase world-wide). the flora,
fauna, fungi, and so forth are indicated by shape and design, not
by biomes (although to be fair, the rest of the museum is based on
them) - the design exhausts the idea of natural history, which is
neither nature nor history, nor any combination of these troubled
terms. the museum itself is caught in a time-warp of a dying
planet: the bookstore features books about the crisis, and the
wild animal panoramas now seem sepulchers. the museum is a tomb of
life-forms, doing what it can against the onslaught. the life-
forms themselves are mythologies denuded of microbial and other
subtle environmental factors; what counts is display. there were
children everywhere, loving it; i hope at the very least that the
sense of wonder that was clearly awakened leads to commitment
before it's too late for all of us.

http://www.alansondheim.org/amnh3.jpg
http://www.alansondheim.org/amnh4.jpg
http://www.alansondheim.org/amnh5.jpg
http://www.alansondheim.org/amnh6.jpg
http://www.alansondheim.org/amnh7.jpg
http://www.alansondheim.org/amnh8.jpg

Looking Easier Than Reading

The physicality of the anomaly always asserts itself, even down the
hierarchy of protocol layers. Google is everywhere, tabulating these and
others; sometimes the real takes over when processing slows and crashes; I
had one such crash during the making of the image. But the obdurate is
there, among the remnants of sex, which are not there, and death, which
is: that is the only equation, and one that persists in existing until
life is eradicated. We can't place our bets because there will be no one
to collect. Many such images as these are on many such planets, however
ephemeral; even Mars has its markings. If a tree falls, it falls, and it's
gone, just as the sound is gone. These gasped at zero to forty miles an
hour and the next time the configuration will be different, as it already
is, fading, history is fading. The truth, Badiou, is that books don't live
forever, and Google's privacy is a sham. Anyone can burrow the database
from within; we all live in tunnels beneath the firewalls where there is
nothing done, nothing to be done. A friend of mine constantly takes notes
to use against people. Badiou takes notes to how how the world's held, but
the world's held up by philosophy in both senses of the phrase, just not
in the physical. It's on the way out. We're on the way out, we're already
"that class," as my grade school teacher said, implying we'd live forever
in infamy. She's dead now, everything in the world is different and
sattered, shattering. If you're born in the middle of it, you die in the
middle of it. We're just desperate to keep alive, we dream of sex and
fantasy, in the imaginary, die, in the real, and grovel in surplus in the
symbolic. These images are tombstone, graves, they're beneath the ground,
on the bridge they're struggling. I do philosophy this way because it's
easier to read.
(our full set)
Helena Espvall, cello, electronics
Azure Carter, songs, voice
Alan Sondheim, sarangi, oud, cura cumbus, viola (in that order)
Songs: Buried, Blood Tantra, Creatures
This is a rough recording, with the sarangi under-recorded,
and Helena and Azure under-recorded on and off; I used a small
Marshall amp (which unfortunately was directed towards the zoom);
Helena and Azure used a large stage amp/mixer system (which
unfortunately was pointed elsewhere). But you'll get the idea.
The bill also included Dan Joseph on hammered dulcimer, and
the Jesse Kudler/Barry Weisblat Duo on electronics. The evening
was a success! We had a full audience. Thanks to everyone
who helped put the event together.
